Privacy Policy — The Function

The Function helps you find parties and events near your campus, buy tickets to them, and see what's happening while they're on. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect
Your account. Your email address, a username, and whatever you choose to put on your profile — display name, bio, profile picture, cover image. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the email address and name they release to us; if you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we only ever see the relay address.
Your date of birth. We ask for it once, at signup. We store the date and a band derived from it (16–17, 18–20, 21+). The band is what actually gates entry to age-restricted events — your exact birthday is never shown to hosts or to other people. You must be at least 16 to use The Function.
We do not scan your face, check a government ID, or store identity documents. Age is self-reported.
Your location. With your permission, so we can show real distances to events near you and place them on a map. We use it while you're using the app; we don't track you in the background. You can refuse and the app still works — you just lose distance sorting and the map.
Photos and video you upload. Event flyers, outfit and recap pictures, and short clips from events. Clips include sound. These are visible to other people according to the event they're attached to.
Payments. When you buy a ticket, your card details go directly to Stripe and are never sent to us or stored on our servers. We keep a record of what you bought, what it cost, and whether it was refunded. If you host paid events, Stripe collects the identity and bank details it needs to pay you out, under their own terms.
Your activity. Which events you save and RSVP to, who you follow and who follows you, your messages in event chats and direct messages, your check-ins at events, your answers to post-event surveys, and any reports you file.
Your school, if you choose to link one.
A push notification token, if you allow notifications, so we can tell you about events and messages.
Who else sees your data
Other users. Your profile, your posts, and — depending on the privacy setting you pick — whether you're going to an event. You control that setting per event; "friends only" and "private" both exist and both are enforced on the server, not just hidden in the app.
Hosts. If you RSVP or buy a ticket, the host sees that you're attending and your display name. They do not see your birthday, your email or your location.
Stripe, for payments and payouts.
Anthropic and OpenAI. Some features send content to AI services: writing an event description, generating a flyer image, the nightlife assistant, and automated safety checks on images and event text. What we send is the content itself — an event's details, an uploaded image — not your identity. These providers do not train models on it.
Supabase, who host our database and servers.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Safety
We check uploaded images and event text automatically for content that breaks our rules. People can report events and users. When something is reported we look at the content involved, and we may keep a record of a report and its outcome even after the content is removed — otherwise the same problem can simply be reposted.
Reports are not shown to the person reported, and your identity is never shared with a host you report.
People under 18
The Function is for people 16 and over. Events can be marked 16+, 18+ or 21+, and we enforce that with the age band derived from your birthday: an under-18 account cannot see, RSVP to, or buy a ticket to an 18+ event, and cannot see its exact address.
Because age is self-reported, this is an honour system. It stops casual access, not determined lying. Hosts of age-restricted events should check ID at the door.
If you believe someone under 16 has an account, email james@getthefunction.com and we will remove it.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account. That removes your profile, posts, photos, messages and RSVPs.
Two things survive deletion, for reasons we think are fair to be explicit about: records of completed payments, which we're required to keep for tax and accounting; and safety reports about your account, which would otherwise be erasable by deleting and re-registering.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or take it elsewhere. Email james@getthefunction.com and we'll help.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect rather than quietly updating this page.
